Library of Congress Recommends Civil War Photo Sleuth

The Library of Congress now recommends Civil War Photo Sleuth as a top resource for identifying historical images. Help uncover identities, one photo at a time.

Exciting news: the Library of Congress now includes Civil War Photo Sleuth in its official research guide on Local History and Family Photos.

The guide, created to help researchers go “Beyond the Library,” recommends trusted external tools for identifying and understanding historical photographs. CWPS is featured as a resource under the section titled “Resources for Identifying Historical Photographs”, alongside the Digital Public Library of America and other sites.

This recognition by one of the world’s most respected cultural institutions is a meaningful milestone for us—and for the entire community of sleuths who contribute their time, research, and expertise. It affirms our collective mission: to use the power of crowdsourcing and facial recognition technology to reconnect Civil War-era portraits with lost identities and stories.

Whether you’re a longtime user or just discovering CWPS for the first time, we invite you to explore the platform and see what thousands of other photo sleuths are uncovering. You can upload your own mystery images, search our growing database, or collaborate on IDs with fellow historians and enthusiasts.

Special thanks to the team at the Library of Congress for their support—and to all of you for continuing to make CWPS a vibrant and valuable resource for historical discovery.
